These Greeks, known ever since by the name of Argonauts, had as their pilot an exceptional man, capable of seeing through walls and recognizing the bottom of the sea at a glance. His name was Lynceus, and the tales of his prodigious sight would circulate for centuries throughout all the lands of the world
known. But the memory of men is weak. Someone, sometime, forgot the story of the Argonauts and attributed Lynceus« extraordinary visual capacity to a mysterious, feared animal, only glimpsed occasionally in the deepest parts of the forest, which was known by a name very similar to that of the mythological hero. Since then, it is proverbial to say of someone who sees very well that they have »a lynx's sight« and that "they are a
lynx.
It was believed to be very rare, as those who accidentally killed a lynx could not accept that an animal of rather small stature was the same beast that was the subject of such terrifying legends. » It was taken for granted that the »wolf-cat' must be at least as large as true wolves, with large pointed ears, powerful jaws, enormous and heavy claws, a striped or spotted back, a long tail ending in a tuft, and, above all, a gleaming and diabolical gaze. From that era come paintings of lynxes and many of the figures that depicted the devil with something of a great cat, be it the eyes, the claws, the tail, or the pointed ears. But the lynx, little by little, is ceasing to be a mystery. Certainly, much remains to be known about its biology, but more and more scholars are determined to unveil each and every one of its secrets. However, knowledge, the end of the mystery, has brought an undeniable truth: the lynx is very scarce, disappearing rapidly from our last forests, and will possibly be only a memory before we know it well. A vigorous man, with courage and cold blood, could, strictly speaking, without weapons, emerge triumphant from the attack of an old wolf. In a fight with a lynx, he would surely succumb. » Such a laudatory statement from an expert, though undoubtedly controversial and open to discussion, perfectly conveys an idea of the capabilities of our cat. Its paws, ending in long, retractable claws sharpened like razors, are endowed with terrible strength and move with dizzying speed. Lynxes, at least in Doñana, are long-legged, resembling greyhounds or slender hounds. Its long legs – when seeing a lynx in nature, this detail is surprising, as it is not well reflected in most drawings, paintings of lynxes, and photographs – allow it to run swiftly and jump with enormous agility. In Poland, lynx jumps of up to 5 m have been measured, and even greater if the animal launched from the top of a branch. When pursuing prey, the average length of each stride is about 2 m. In this painting by Manuel Sosa, we observe a magnificent Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) hunting a Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa) portrayed in an oil painting. Its ability to climb is well known, but it is often overlooked that its aversion to water does not prevent it from being at least a moderate swimmer. It is not, however, a good long-distance runner. If the prey is alerted, or the first attempt to capture it fails, the lynx will abandon the pursuit. If it is itself being pursued, it will climb to the top of a tree; but if the terrain is open, it will allow itself to be caught, exhausted, after a few hundred meters of swift running. We have already mentioned where the idea of the lynx's extraordinary eyesight comes from. Professor Lindemann used two young captive specimens that he himself had raised from a very young age to conduct experiments that would inform him about their visual acuity. To this end, he placed the lynx in a fixed spot and moved stuffed animals in front of it at varying distances. In winter, on the snow, his specimens could see a Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) at half a kilometer, a hare at 300 m, and a mouse at 75 m. If the hare was white, however, it went unnoticed beyond about 25 m. The results seem to indicate an animal with good eyesight, certainly, but nothing exceptional. Its auditory faculties, however, do seem far superior to human ones. Most scientists who have studied the lynx in Europe and America affirm that prey are located primarily by hearing, rarely by sight, and almost never by smell. Lindemann's lynxes, for their part, could hear a whistle at a considerably greater distance than a dog could, and almost twice the distance a normally endowed human could.

The last Lynx

Property of His Royal Highness Felipe VI

PURCHASE A CANVAS REPRODUCTION:

You can choose a custom size by varying the original width (cms)

  Buy

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://manuelsosa.com/wp-content/uploads/001/lince-iberico-783x579.jpg" alt="Property of His Royal Highness Felipe VI" itemprop="image" height="579" width="783" title="Iberian lynx painting. In Spain, we are now beginning to know with concrete data what the lynx's prey consists of, and in what proportion, and it is hoped that ongoing studies, mainly in the Doñana National Park, will allow us to establish this with greater precision. Miguel Delibes, along with Fernando Palacios, Jesús Garzón, and Javier Castroviejo, have been able to analyze 16 digestive tracts from as many lynxes that, unfortunately, had been poached in Sierra Morena and the Montes de Toledo. They have also examined 37 excrements collected in the mountain ranges bordering Cáceres and Salamanca, possibly the northernmost stronghold of the species, unless it still exists in the Pyrenees. The results of the aforementioned analyses allowed them to establish that among 85 prey items ingested by the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus), there were 48 European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), 3 European Hares (Lepus europaeus), 13 Wood Mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), 3 Garden Dormice (Eliomys quercinus), 3 Common Voles (Microtus arvalis), 2 House Mice (Mus musculus), 2 unidentified rodents, 3 Thrushes (Turdus spp.), 3 Red-legged Partridges (Alectoris rufa), 4 indeterminate birds, and 1 lizard. In Doñana, the diet is somewhat different, with European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), ducks, and ungulates gaining importance, and rodents losing it. Out of 126 prey items identified from scat analyses, there were 110 European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), 5 rodents, 2 young Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) or Fallow Deer (Dama dama), 7 ducks (Anas spp.), and 2 birds of other genera (one of them probably a Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa)). In any case, it is evident: a) that Spanish lynxes feed primarily on European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), which means myxomatosis must have dealt them a blow of incalculable consequences; b) that cervids and partridges are of little importance in their diet, which is highlighted if we consider that Fallow Deer (Dama dama), Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), and Red-legged Partridges (Alectoris rufa) are extraordinarily abundant in Doñana. Both conclusions compel us to consider irrational the persecution to which lynxes, like other carnivores, are subjected in large hunting reserves, where it is often necessary to resort to professional trappers to limit the number of European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Furthermore, as we will see, the lynx is a key player in limiting the population of other carnivores, especially the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). The name 'cat' and 'cervine wolf' (lobo cerval) by which the lynx has traditionally been known must stem from its ability to capture and kill deer, which are much larger than itself. Carrying out such feats requires a perfected killing technique, which our feline does not lack.
In the painting above, a lynx is magnificently depicted in a lunge towards a Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa).
Aunque pocas veces ha sido representado en pintura, el lince ataca generalmente a los grandes animales saltándoles al cuello, de forma que una vez sujeto éste con las garras pueda con los caninos hacer presa en la garganta, provocando la muerte por sofocación.

Oil painting on panel of a Lynx wrapped in the morning mist

Lynx lynx (Lynx lynx)
Los etólogos piensan hoy dia que el shock sufrido por la presa al ver de pronto al lince sobre ella es de tal naturaleza que provoca una parálisis de terror.

PURCHASE A CANVAS REPRODUCTION:
You can choose a custom size
varying the original width (cms)

  Buy

AA lynx will rarely kill more than one prey in a single night, and there will be several attempts that will not succeed, resulting in a blank night.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://manuelsosa.com/wp-content/uploads/001/lince_ovalo-783x972.jpg" alt="Box of Iberian Lynx ( Lynx pardina ). Only recently, with their reintroduction in some countries and serious protection in others, do more promising prospects seem to be opening up for the future of Europe's last big cats. According to studies by the Czech biologist Kratochvil, at the beginning of the historical era, lynxes lived almost everywhere in Europe, except for Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and part of Greece and Portugal (?). Their rarification was slow and gradual until the 19th century, when they still existed in the least populated and most forested regions of almost every country on the continent. Since then the rate of disappearance has increased dramatically. Already in the 20th century fawns have ceased to be part of the fauna in Italy, Switzerland, Hungary and France (it seems unlikely that lynxes, European or Mediterranean, exist in the French Pyrenees), having done so earlier in other countries such as Austria and Germany. Today, European lynx populations can be considered reduced to four: the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, the Carpathians and Scandinavia, Russia and Poland. Apart from the Iberian lynx, Lynx pardina, and the more northern populations, included in the Lynx lynx species, some authors consider the populations of the other two large areas as subspecies of the boreal species: Lynx lynx balcanicus, Lynx lynx carpathicus and Lynx lynx lynx lynx, but most do not admit it. In any case, much remains to be clarified about the taxonomy of the European lynx. Very recently, the fawn wolf has been reintroduced in Bavaria (Germany). The marked reduction of the Iberian lynx's range seems to be quite recent. In the Bronze Age, according to archaeological finds, it was present almost everywhere in the country. It still existed in Vasconia in the 18th century, and in Galicia in the mid-19th century. In this respect, the notes of the Spanish naturalist Mariano de la Paz Graells in his book Fauna M astodológica Ibérica , which, although published at the end of the last century, was written in the middle of that century, are of great interest. In it we read: "I have found it in the mountains of Guada rrama, and it has even entered the garden of the small house below the Royal Heritage in El Escorial... I have received specimens to exchange with other museums in Europe hunted in Andalusia, Extremadura, Cuenca, Sierra Morena, Salamanca, in Las Batuecas and in Palencia and Asturias.

SHARE IT ON

The authors

Article from the encyclopedia of Iberian fauna by Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente, illustrated with the Iberian Lynx paintings by the artist Manuel Sosa. You are invited to enjoy his complete work on his gallery's website https://manuelsosa.com

Cuadros de Lince – El Lince Ibérico Láminas de arte para cuadros.
