An elusive Otter rests for a moment in the choppy waters of a mountain river in the wild Spanish Pyrenees. I spent five days camped in this secluded spot, collaborating in a census of this species. I had to remain as motionless and unnoticed as possible for long hours, which allowed me to patiently work on the preliminary canvas of this painting. A playful otter in front of my easel last evening - while I was picking up my brushes - was the reward for such a long wait. The sinuous forms of this beautiful mammal were decisive in the final composition, already in my studio. An 's' runs diagonally across the painting and is repeated in the rocks and the animal, giving rhythm to the work. The otter, always alert, has been painted away from the centre to create tension and force the viewer to travel through the work. Infinite washes of ochre and earth were necessary to achieve the ocelli of light in the water filtering through the willows on that magical autumn afternoon. Oil on canvas.
