Witches' Pointe (Monastery of Tella)

Tella, which is located in the area of influence of the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, has always been linked to mystery and legend. The werewolf of Peña Montañesa, Silván de Tella, the Puntón de las Brujas... The oldest locals say that witches used to meet in the dolmen of Tella many years ago and perform covens. They smeared themselves with ointments and aphrodisiac plants and danced around the goat that represented the devil. The hermitage of San Juanipablo is at the foot of Puntón de las Brujas. It was consecrated in 1019 by Bishop Borrel of Roda de Isábena. It is a beautiful temple due to the simplicity of its construction. The union of the two saints seemed necessary to fight against the magic of that place, a meeting place for witches' covens and witches' parties... Oil on canvas. Manuel Sosa © 2006
