For a nature painter, the true challenge is not just to copy the forms of a bird, but to capture its spirit on the canvas. When confronting this oil painting, I decided to dispense with any element of the landscape that could distract the gaze and left the background in absolute purity. I wanted the viewer to feel the same as I do in the field: that unique vibration of the erect male, stretching its neck with pride to break the silence with its call. I meticulously delighted in the strength of its eye-ring, in the fiery red of its beak and in the superb architecture of its flank feathers. An attempt to freeze the echo of a wild heartbeat that defines, better than any other, the essence of our Mediterranean scrubland. © Manuel Sosa 2018

    What a powerful portrait, master! The Red-legged Partridge is the quintessential bird of our scrublands, and you have captured that unique and wild moment of the erect male, stretching its neck and breaking the silence of dawn with its song.

    The cleanliness of the composition on that immaculate white background is an absolute delight, which makes all the strength fall upon the figure of the animal. You have perfectly captured the vividness of the eye-ring and the fiery red beak so characteristic, as well as the spectacular barred pattern on the flanks, with those incredible brown and black tones that have amazing volume. The subtle ocher and earthy brushstroke at the base perfectly depicts the stony ground where it rests without overloading the painting, maintaining that clean and elegant air of your best wildlife profiles. It is a superb piece.
